Global Positioning System by Duaa Ghneim

Now you can stay connected to the world by the Global Positioning System, something we commonly know as GPS. It is the most reliable tool of navigation, communication and timing services without any hindrance due to weather or distance. GPS is not only an effective tool of communication, it is a great aid in land surveying, map making, navigation, aviation and much more.

GPS (Global Positioning System) , is a satellite navigation system that provides positioning and clock time to the terrestrial user. The system consists of more than just satellites. While the satellites make up the space segment, the system also includes a control segment that monitors and maintains the satellites, as well as the user segment that gets to have all the fun. and its part is space segment ,control segment, and user segment. To understand exactly why it is so useful and important, we should first look at how GPS works, the GPS satellites orbiting the earth in orbits very specific and accurate twice away (24 hours), and during the rotation transmitted signals carry information on the ground.    (The fundamentals of GPS 2002).

The GPS system was developed to meet military needs it has been used in aircraft and ships, Vehicle tracking is one of the fastest-growing GPS applications today, uses in transport companies ,and the cost guard . but there are many other ways to benefit from GPS such as :provide detailed maps of the drivers of places and streets where they are located ,to guide the aircraft in the sky accurately, air monitoring and tracking hurricanes and raging winds and waves in the ocean, if your vehicle is ever stolen the GPS system will track the vehicle , GPS system are use to detected structural problems in building and roads and to predict ,If you buy a new car, there is a good chance that an option is available to get a GPS navigation system included with it ,Cell phone GPS is also growing by millions ,Newer cameras have a built-in GPS! When you take a photo it tells you the latitude and longitude of where you were and stamps that information on the photo, and it can calculate other information, such as bearing, track, trip distance, sunrise and sunset time, and so forth, Finally the GPS receiver displays the applicable information on the screen. However, here are some of the disadvantages to consider
Reception: GPS devices are limited by having clear access to the satellites that provide the tracking. In locations with tall buildings or sparse coverage, reception can be poor, Directions: Turn-by-turn directions are not available on every type of GPS device. Some will give very little advanced notice before an upcoming turn, Accuracy: Maps on GPS devices are not updated in real time for all models. This means that it is possible a GPS device will direct you onto a road that is closed or no longer exists. It could also miss new roads and businesses.(Disadvantages of a GPS System 1999)

Users are now able to communicate with each other even in remotest part of the world owing to this technology.
In realizing the relations of the theories of technological developments with our daily lives, engineers are able to understand and more equipped towards the task are creating a more sustainable future.
